El Oro area birds

(near 1000 meters at Buenaventura reserve level)

Birds that are mostly in the southwest tropical lowland elevations of Ecuador are not included here unless they are wanderers. Some water birds and birds not likely to be seen on the actual El Oro camera are removed as are several of the North American species. (For the full list see the link below.) Blue species names are sound file links mostly from the great Macauley site or Xeno Canto site. If the link is to a single recording at Macauley you can click on the species summary link in their newest update for more recording options. At Xeno click on the species name to bring up the species summary page and map. Because of updates to both sites some links are broken until I readjust them to single recordings or the new search patterns. All links in the blue box birds should be active. Note it is best to right click on the links and then open the sound window in a new tab or window. Most of the Macauley links in the blue box birds are to southern Ecuador recordings where possible.

Red highlighted genera are species that overlap with species in NW Ecuador or extensive eastern ranges. Showing which species have extensive ranges at least along the mountains on the western slope. Black genera are thus birds mostly restricted to the southern Ecuador ranges.

Additional info on the hummingbirds included with lengths and plate and image numbers to the Birds of Ecuador, Ridgely and Greenfield. Non-hummer page numbers [XXX:YY] are mainly to Birds of Peru, Princeton Guide, plate number and bird number. Hummer vocalizations are mostly limited to chatter and warning chips but are included as links where available here as well. See the Hummer Page here for more info on those birds specifically.

The species that have actually been seen or were the most frequently heard on the camera (which previously had sound, presently mic-less) are in the blue box at the top for convenience (they are also included in the main list below). Abundance ratings updated for these feeder birds. Red abundances are birds seen on camera at least once. Note that several hummers rated as C or FC for the general area by Ridgely have still never been seen on either camera setup there. They are included only in the bottom or main list for now. The upper birds accounted for the majority of bird vocalizations around the feeders there. Most of them are linked to both recording sites.

The official list for the reserve from Ridgely is here. Occurrence ratings (R VR, etc.) are from Ridgely and that linked list. Updated names have been modified to reflect new Clements list species and subspecies. A few birds with asterisks were not listed by Ridgely but occurrence is felt to be possible from current mapped ranges and altitude preferences.

Viewer for the three WLT cams now added. Click on any of "watch this cam" to see the specific cam enlarged. Do not use the back button to return to multiviewer. Use the "watch webcams" link on the WLT page. The "X" in the bottom right of each cam does work for full screen view. Use ESC button to return to normal view.

UPDATED 11/2011 (Thanks RC for the original bird list proofing)
