AR Syrphidae |
Working list of the Syrphid flies likely in Arkansas. Revised and updated in 2020. Obtained by starting with the Oklahoma list and key in the .pdf paper here. And another beautiful visual key to the Syrphidae here. The first pdf work is from Daniel Shorter and W. A. Drew. You can refer to this link for the specific species differentiation. But I think that Oklahoma was extremely poorly collected. There are only about 70 species in that paper. The subfamilies, tribes and genera are below. These are now updated to the current Nearctica genera.
There are about 1000 species in the US north of Mexico. Most southern states will have 100 to 200 species. Confirmed other states here were added mostly from the monstrous unpublished PhD. of Howard Vincent Weems entitled The Syrphid Flies of the Southeastern United States from 1954. Some have now been added from bugguide sources. This boosted the present list to nearly 150 species. All of those species confirmed in the OK paper are marked with an OK as Weems did not cover that state. (Some species in the OK paper were predicted but had not been proven for the state.) Numbers in parentheses are the number of species in the original Oklahoma paper for each genus. Genera with no number had no known species in the OK paper. Representative images of the genus are linked to genus names. Many species images on the net are linked directly mainly to bugguide now. |
